About the Department

The department was established in the year 2017 with a mission to provide quality education especially to rural women for reaching heights of excellence in a global perspective. At present, the department offers undergraduate programme in Biochemistry with Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), providing students, a flexible and specialized curriculum under Thiruvalluvar University, Serkadu. Our department is fulfilled with experienced, qualified staff members, well equipped laboratory and class rooms. Our faculty members adhere to the possible high standard of teaching and actively work on thrust areas of biochemical research.

Biochemistry laboratory is bestowed with sophisticated analytical instruments to carryout various biochemical assays viz., spectrophotometer, colorimeters, centrifuges, microscopes, incubator, hot air oven, electric water bath, electronic balances, vortex mixture, physical balances and weighing balances. The Department is also offering one year and two years DMLT courses from the academic year 2018 in association with the All India Medical Laboratory Technologist’s Association (AIMLTA), Patna.

The department is committed with regular International, National and State level Seminars, conferences and workshops. Eminent resource persons from various reputed institutions and industrial experts are invited to expose the students to the latest advancements in the research and industrial front. To connect the theory and practical the students are facilitated with industrial visit and reputed research laboratories such as IITs every year.

Biochemistry department has an excellent record in academics which produced Gold medal and University ranks. In addition to academics, the department collaborated with organizations’ and industrial partners to encourage the students with entrepreneurship programs to create more job opportunities and also preparing them for bright future. Our Alumni are placed and persuade higher studies in multispeciality hospitals and laboratories like CMC, Vellore. The department is also associated with environment protection activities and social activities to create awareness among the society. 

About the Course

Biochemistry aims to understand the basics of all biological processes that take place in the living beings. Biochemistry is the point where chemistry, biology and medicine meets and it deals with the molecular interactions between various intra and inter cellular compartments of living organisms and diseases.  It combines the core of biology and chemistry, which opens the new door for research from the very basic fundamentals.  It has provided explanations for the causes of many diseases in humans, animals and plants.  It can frequently suggest ways by which such diseases may be prevented or treated.

Accentuate the importance of biochemistry in medicinal field, it helps in understanding of the molecular and cellular processes involved in both health and disease leading to the development of new treatments. Advances in biochemistry are largely responsible for the breakdown of traditional boundaries between cell biology, medicine, physics and chemistry as their applications become increasingly wide reaching.

Biochemistry also contributes to protecting the environment, by combating pollution and designing biocompatible products. The genetic engineering of plants has led to advances in agriculture which include crop improvement and resistance to pest and diseases.

Biochemistry provides the foundation of many disciplines, opening up huge potential for future career and placements for the students who successfully completes the degree. It helps in developing the skills needed to investigate both health and disease in biomedical research and hospital laboratory.

Core Subjects

Cell biology, Biomolecules, Analytical Biochemistry, Plant Biochemistry, Enzymes and Intermediary metabolism, Molecular Biology, Physiology and Nutrition, Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Biochemistry and Biotechnology.

Allied/Elective Subjects

Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Endocrinology, Immunology and Pharmaceutical Biochemistry.

Eligibility :

An integral factor for being eligible for this course is that the candidates should passed +2 with Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Zoology, Botany, Biotechnology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Nutritional Biochemistry or any science subject related to Biosciences.
